Deira district

Deira

Coordinates: 25.2719, 55.3095

An old trading district on the eastern bank of the creek — gold and spice markets, traditional Dubai.

About the district

Deira is a historic trading district on the eastern bank of Dubai Creek. It is the business and commercial heart of old Dubai: the legendary Gold Souk and Spice Souk are located right here, and the air is filled with the scents of saffron, frankincense and rose.

The district is densely populated and multifaceted: cramped lanes, shops, traditional dhows at the jetties and bustling trade create the atmosphere of an Eastern bazaar. Deira contrasts with the glossy new Dubai and is a must-visit for its local colour.

Deira is Dubai without filters: noisy lanes, traders beckoning you to their shops, and jetties piled high with goods from cargo dhows. Here you should simply wander without a plan, try the street food and cross the creek by abra — you won't find a cheaper or more atmospheric attraction.
