Downtown district
Downtown Dubai
25.1972, 55.2744 The showcase of modern Dubai: the Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and the singing fountains.
About the district
Downtown is the grand centre of modern Dubai, designed by the developer Emaar around the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa (828 m). The district's main ensemble — the skyscraper, the giant The Dubai Mall, the singing fountains on an artificial lake and the Dubai Opera theatre — is gathered into a single pedestrian zone along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, so you can walk from one landmark to another.
The heart of the district is The Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the world: more than 1,200 shops, a giant aquarium with an underwater zoo, an indoor ice rink, a cinema and a waterfall installation. Nearby, across a bridge from the mall, is the Souk Al Bahar market-gallery with restaurants whose terraces overlook the lake with the fountains, and the Time Out Market food hall featuring cuisines from across the city.
This is a prestigious and expensive district: housing here means elite residences and serviced apartments, while the hotels range from the ultra-luxury Armani inside the Burj Khalifa itself to more affordable modern options near the metro. For a first visit to Dubai, Downtown is the best base: everything important is at hand and the transport links are excellent. The flip side is high prices, evening crowds at the fountains and traffic jams at the entrance during rush hour.
