This itinerary is built so that in a single day you can feel how Dubai grew from a trading port into a city of the future. All the points are connected by the metro and abras, so you don’t need a car. The plan is flexible: it’s easy to adapt to the heat, the pace of travelling with children, or your own interests.
Morning: Deira and the markets
Start with Deira — the old trading district. Drop by the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, where the air smells of saffron and rose, and haggling is part of the culture. The morning is the best time: it’s cool and there are no crowds. This is an immersion in the “real” Dubai, contrasting with the skyscrapers.
The abra crossing
From Deira, head down to the water and cross by abra over Dubai Creek to Bur Dubai — the ride costs a symbolic 1 dirham. From the water you get a view of the old city and the moorings of traditional dhows. It’s one of the most atmospheric and inexpensive activities in the city.
Bur Dubai and the Al Fahidi quarter
On the western bank, stroll through the historic Al Fahidi quarter with its wind towers, museums, galleries and courtyard coffee shops. Here the atmosphere of Dubai before the era of skyscrapers has been preserved — the perfect place for an unhurried walk and photos.
Day: the Museum of the Future and Downtown
Take the metro to the Museum of the Future — a ring-shaped building with Arabic calligraphy on its facade. Tickets sell out in advance, so it’s best to buy them online. It’s a convenient stop between the old and new city.
Next — to Downtown. Everything modern is concentrated here: The Dubai Mall with its aquarium, the ascent of the Burj Khalifa and lunch with a view of the lake. In the daytime heat the mall is the perfect place to wait out the swelter.
Evening: the fountains
Stay until sunset — the show of the singing Dubai Fountain at the foot of the Burj Khalifa runs every half hour. The best spots by the railing are taken 10–15 minutes before it starts. This is the logical final point of the day: you finish the route in the very place where all the city’s evening life is concentrated.
Itinerary timing
A rough plan for the day will help you not miss anything:
| Time | Where | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Deira | Markets, the abra crossing |
| Midday | Bur Dubai | The Al Fahidi quarter |
| Day | Downtown | The Museum of the Future, the Burj Khalifa |
| Evening | Downtown | The fountain show |
The timing is flexible: if you’re tired, you can wait out the midday heat in The Dubai Mall and move the viewing deck to sunset.
How to adapt the itinerary
The plan is easy to adapt to yourself:
- in the heat — more time in air-conditioned malls and the museum, walks in the morning and evening;
- with children — add the aquarium in The Dubai Mall and don’t rush;
- a second day — devote it to the coast: beaches, Palm Jumeirah, views of the Burj Al Arab.
Transport and tips
All the points on the route are connected by the metro and abras, so buy a Nol card in advance — more in the article on Dubai transport. Get your Burj Khalifa ticket online, carry water and a hat, and dress more modestly in the markets and historic quarters.
