Dubai is a city by the sea, and a beach holiday here is possible almost all year round. The choice is wide: from broad free urban beaches with showers and cafés to private beach clubs with pools and service. In this guide we’ll work out which beaches are where, how they differ, what to bring and which rules you need to follow.
Free urban beaches
Dubai’s main advantage is its excellent free beaches with facilities. They are clean, well kept, with showers, lifeguards and cafés nearby, and they are almost as good as the paid ones.
- JBR (The Beach) — a wide beach next to Dubai Marina and JBR, with a promenade, restaurants, water sports and the Ain Dubai wheel next door;
- Kite Beach — a favourite spot for an active day out in Umm Suqeim: kitesurfing, volleyball, food trucks and a postcard view of the Burj Al Arab;
- Sunset Beach — a calmer beach with the same view of the sail-shaped hotel, popular at sunset;
- La Mer and Jumeirah Beach — coastal areas in Jumeirah with cafés, shops and street art.
Beach clubs
If you want service and quiet, choose a beach club. For an entry fee you get a sun lounger, access to a pool, a restaurant and a relaxed atmosphere without the crowds. The fee often includes a deposit that goes towards food and drinks.
The clubs are located on the Palm Jumeirah, in Al Sufouh and at major hotels. It is a good format for a leisurely day by the water, especially if you want to combine the beach, the pool and lunch in one place.
Hotel beaches
Guests of coastal hotels have access to private beaches with sun loungers, towels, bars and water sports. This is the most hassle-free option: everything is included in the stay, and you can step out to the sea straight from your room. If a beach holiday is your priority, choose a beachfront hotel — more on this in the guide on where to stay in Dubai.
Beach formats: a comparison
To choose for your mood and budget, compare the three main formats:
| Format | Price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Urban beach | Free | Shower, café nearby, lifeguards |
| Beach club | Paid entry | Sun lounger, pool, service |
| Hotel beach | For guests | Towels, sun loungers, bar |
After comparing, the logic is simple: for an active, budget day an urban beach is enough; for a relaxed day with a pool, head to a club; and for maximum comfort with no worries, go to a hotel beach.
When is the best beach season
You can swim in Dubai year-round: even in winter the water holds around 21–24 °C. But it is most comfortable from October to April, when there is no debilitating heat and you can spend the whole day on the beach.
In summer the water warms up a great deal and it is hard to be out in the sun — shade, pools and the early or evening hours come to the rescue. More on the weather month by month is in the article on when to go to Dubai.
Safety and rules of conduct
Dubai’s beaches are safe, but it is important to follow the basic rules:
- swim in areas with lifeguards and pay attention to the flags;
- a modest dress code applies: swimwear is acceptable on the beach itself, but you should change into more covered clothing as you leave;
- sunbathing topless is prohibited;
- bear in mind that some beaches have separate days or zones for women and families.
What to bring
The sun in Dubai is intense even in winter, so pack a minimal kit:
- high-SPF sunscreen and a hat;
- water and a light snack;
- a change of clothes and a towel (urban beaches don’t provide them);
- a little money for a café, lounger rental or a shower.
How to get there
Most popular beaches are concentrated along the coast and conveniently connected to the city. The tram and metro run to JBR and the Marina, while it is easier to reach Kite Beach and Sunset Beach in Umm Suqeim by taxi. Read about city transport and the Nol card in the article on Dubai transport.
It is convenient to plan a day by the sea using the district map: almost every coastal quarter has its own beach. And for ideas on what to see nearby, look among the interesting locations.
