Dubai is known for expensive experiences: going up the Burj Khalifa, water parks, restaurants in the sky. But you can feel the city without spending much — many of the most striking places cost nothing. In this guide we honestly break down what to see in Dubai for free, and where you will have to pay just a little. This is part of our big overview of Dubai’s main attractions.
The dancing fountains — the main free show
The signature of evening Dubai is the dancing fountains at the foot of the Burj Khalifa. Jets of water rise tens of metres to music and lights, and you can watch it completely free from the Dubai Mall promenade or the bridge over the lake. The show runs every 30 minutes in the evenings. Be honest with your expectations: entry to the tower’s observation decks is paid, but the building itself and the fountains are free.
The JBR and Dubai Marina promenades
A walk along the water is one of the best free activities in the city. The pedestrian promenade of The Walk and The Beach in JBR stretches along the beach with a view of the Ain Dubai wheel, while the neighbouring Dubai Marina offers a promenade among skyscrapers and yachts. It is pleasant to stroll here in the evening, browse the shop windows and admire the street art — none of it costs anything.
Free beaches
Dubai has many city beaches with free entry:
- Kite Beach — a wide beach with white sand, a view of the Burj Al Arab, a running track and workout areas;
- JBR / The Beach — a beach in the heart of the tourist zone next to cafés and shops;
- Sunset Beach (Umm Suqeim) — a calm spot with the best angle on the sail-shaped hotel.
Swimming and entry are free; you only pay to rent loungers and umbrellas. For a detailed look at the coast, see the separate guide to Dubai’s beaches.
The old town: Al Fahidi and the souks
To see where Dubai began, head to the historic Al Fahidi district with its mud-brick houses and wind towers — you can wander its narrow lanes for free. Nearby, in Bur Dubai and Deira, are the colourful eastern bazaars: the gold souk with windows glittering with tonnes of jewellery, and the fragrant spice souk. Strolling and window-shopping cost nothing — you only pay if you decide to buy something.
Jumeirah Mosque from the outside
Jumeirah Mosque is one of the most photogenic in the city, especially at sunset. You can view and photograph it from the outside for free at any time. Visitors are admitted inside on paid guided tours, but for a beautiful shot the exterior is enough.
The abra across the creek — almost free
The crossing on a traditional wooden abra boat across Dubai Creek costs a symbolic 1 AED (about 25 roubles). It is not quite free, but so cheap that it would be a shame not to take a ride: the water offers the best views of the old town, and the trip itself is an atmospheric mini-adventure.
La Mer, City Walk and the parks
The seafront zone of La Mer with its bright murals and beach, the pedestrian district of City Walk with its street art, and the canals of Madinat Jumeirah from the outside are great places for free walks and photos. In the cool season, add the city parks to your route: entry to most of them is a pittance or free, and at the Ras Al Khor reserve you can watch flamingos for free.
What is free and what is almost free
| Place | Cost | What is available |

How to save money in Dubai
A few simple tips will help you stay on budget:
- get around by metro and tram — it is cheap, and the views from the elevated trains are excellent;
- city beaches are free, so bring water and a blanket instead of renting loungers;
- many malls are free attractions in themselves (the aquarium is visible from the mall, the fountains from the promenade);
- plan outdoor walks for the morning and evening so you do not spend on taxis because of the heat.

Conclusion
Dubai does not have to be expensive: the fountains, promenades, beaches, old town and souks are accessible without a ticket, and the abra costs a single dirham. You will only have to pay for the observation decks, water parks and restaurants — but you can put together a full itinerary without them too. All the free spots with coordinates and a map are gathered below and in the locations section.
